Matching measuring rate to line speed
How to work out whether 1 kHz is plenty or nowhere near enough.
The arithmetic is simpler than it looks. Divide the surface speed by the smallest feature you need to resolve, and that is your minimum measuring rate. A web moving at 300 metres a minute that needs one-millimetre resolution needs 5 kHz.
Why more isn’t always better
A faster sensor averages over a shorter time window, so it is noisier. If your application doesn’t need the rate, a slower sensor will give you a cleaner reading. Rate is a requirement to meet, not a figure to maximise.
